Audience

Posted by : Aiman and Sabaina

During the research of our documentary, our media studies teacher laid a lot of stress upon the importance of our target audience. This is because our documentary is being made for the audience to consume and interpret. It is very important to understand what is the driving factor of people towards our media text, and to know what our audience would want to see in our product we have run through questionnaires and interviews so that we could mold the final product in accordance to the demand of the people we are targeting. We understand how much importance the audience have due to which I have written the following information regarding audience that I came across during my media studies theory classes, and now I understand why we have been told to lay stress upon and keep in consideration the people we targeting at during the creation of our product.

What is an audience?

Before going on with the relative importance and ideologies revolving around the different groups of audiences around the world, we should first understand what an audience is. Audience is that that segment of people in particular for whom a media text is produced and to whom it is targeted at by the producer so that they consume it and interpret it in ways they like.

Why are audiences' important?
There are a number of reasons why audiances' are one of the main concerns of many producers during the creation of different media texts. Reason such as:
  • If there are not people to see a particular media text then what is the point of making it?
  • Through audiences we can establish the size of people that appreciated and liked a particular media text and determine whether it was a success in delivering its ideology to the people who watched it or not?
  • The consumption of the media text by the people will be the income for the producer. No producer would want to make something that no person will be interested in watching as no consumption would mean no rewards in return for the hard work and money put within the creation of that particular media text.
  • The advertisers play an imperative role in the creation of media texts. Most of the media related products are a result of the heavy investments made by the advertisers in order to achieve their own goals of interacting with people. These advertisers would want to know that if they are getting in return the value for their money invested, i.e. to discover among which segment of people has the advertisement become popular and the effectiveness of the advertisement (how people relate to it) by determining how many people has it attracted towards it. These advertising companies have segmented audiences in terms of social and economic values:
  • Survivors: Those people who want security and like routine
  • Social Climbers: Those who have a liking for the status symbols and materialism
  • Care Givers: Those are interested in caring and sharing.
  • Explorers: Those who believe in personal growth and the effectiveness of their actions towards influencing social change.

What role does media texts perform for the audience?
  • ·         It gives identity to the individuals.
  • ·         It gives a sense of purpose, creates aims and provides aspiration.
  • ·         It gives guidelines on how to fulfill these aims.
  • ·         It is a source of escapism for people. People get an alternative if they failed and to release their inner frustrations by relating to the ideologies of different media texts.
