This post has been created to show the extras and the behind the scsne footage of the entire documentary. It comprises of three videos:
1) My and Sabaina's footage during the shoot of our documentary and the blooper videos of the people in our documentary
2) The raw footage, which consists of the footage we shot that has not been filmed in our documentary as we found better clips than them.

Indoors alter Outdoors - Editing

After lot of debate, it was decided that Sabina will be doing the editing of our documentary considering that she had the software Final Cut Pro and she knew her way around it, and also that as I did the outdoor shoot myself so Sabaina took the initiative to do this part of the process. The editing process has been posted by Sabaina in her blog, here is the link to that post:

Ancillary tasks - The making of our newspaper advert.

The idea for the construction of our newspaper advert was to take a picture out of the documentary, give it a sketching effect, state the logos, Production Company and dates etc. The reason why we wanted to give it a sketchy effect was that we thought this would give a very nice and different effect to the overall poster. It would work as a tactic for ourselves to attract the audience towards it as out of the newspapers full of texts our poster would defiantly stand out. The original picture would not have looked as much interesting attractive if posted directly.

The first step was to find a good and appropriate picture out of the documentary. Sabaina and I went through the whole documentary twice and finally managed to locate a picture that we thought would suit the most. This is the screen shot of the picture which has been cropped into the final picture of the newspapers advert.

This picture was taken from a side angle and the way Dawood is laying on the floor looked very natural and effectively showed how much he is captured into that game. The fact that he is holding a game in his hand portrays the idea of our documentary very well as it shows an indoor activity on which we have tried to give information about in our media text.

Now, the next part was to find a tool on Photoshop that would give a sketch like effect which would make the picture look catchy and interesting. However, with addition to Photoshop I searched through a lot of online websites that would put such effect in pictures. This was in case the sketches that I would get from Photoshop do not turn out to be the way I wanted them to be and so, I wanted these to act as a backup plan for me. Websites such as:

I pasted this picture on Photoshop and started to use different effects on it to come up with something good. I went to filters icon and selected the sketches icon. I came across a number of options out of which I found the 'Graphic Pen' effect most suitable. It looked like this:

However, I this picture looked very 'noisy'. It was a bit too much for what I wanted it to be. I adjusted the options but it did not turn out as I expected, and so, I took help from the online websites I saved as a back-up.

I first used an online website. I placed the picture for the sketch effect and after a minute or so I received this picture as a result. I found the same problem in this picture as well. It was distorted and loud!

Then, finally I found this website which had a lot of options dedicated to the sketching effects on the pictures. It was my luck that the option I first chose was the one that satisfied me a lot, I used the 'Realistic Pencil Effect Photo Effect' option which suited the picture a lot.

This was the final picture of the advert. Now, the next thing we had to do was to crop it put in accordance to the standard size of a newspaper advert. We found the cropped version way better than the original size as the new version placed more focus on Dawood's face and the game he was holding. Then, I placed the logo of our documentary title on the top of the page in order to make it prominent. Then I pasted the tagline of the advert right under the title, as the tagline played the part of explaining the logo of the documentary to the audience. However, the background was distorting these two, so I came up with an idea of coloring the text's background in white. I did that with the help of the eraser tool. This made these two very prominent and they looked really nice.

Then with the 'Broadway' font I wrote the 'Premiere, at and only on' at the bottom left corner of the newspaper advert as it looked really nice being near to Dawood's picture.

The date and time were written with a different font. This is because these two elements were what we wanted to put more emphasis on. The date and time stood out from other words and they were written in maroon color, this idea was taken from our logo where we have written 'alter' the word which connotes the idea of our documentary in this color, different from the other words on our logo, which automatically grabs the eye of the reader towards itself. So, this was done to make the date and time stand out and to make the components on the advert look cohesive. Also, I placed the logo and the channel name on which our documentary will be running, I added the logo in order to make it stand out and add a bit colors to the advert.

Then the production company was written in the opposite direction to the date and time with the same font but with larger font size, in order to make the production company's logo more prominent to the viewers and made the bottom page balanced on both sides.

And so, I was successful in completing the advert. Here is how the final advert looks like:

Ancillary task - The measurement of our newspaper advert.

I came across a newspaper which had an advert of an upcoming movie printed on it. I really liked the location and size of it. It looks very neat and outstands from the rest of the newspaper. The following is a picture of it:

However, I measured the size of this advert which was 6.5 inches. i.e. four article blocks and 10.5 inches high. I have decided to give four article blocks to my advert, as I want it to become prominent and easily interpretable considering the fact that its a sketch and so the readers will be provided with a size that would easily allow them to understand what the picture connotes.

The final size of our newspaper advert is 8x10.5inches.

Ancillary task - The making of our radio advert

I am going to take the post from Sabaina's blog that will consist of the editing post of our Radio advert. Considering that other than all the research, ideas and script, Sabaina alone did the editing as we distributed the responsibility of editing of the two ancillary tasks between each other. Here is what Sabaina has to say about the editing of our Radio Advert:

Posted by Sabaina:
To make the radio advert I first had to record the script of it on recorder. I made my friend  do the voice over . He is the same person who did the voiceover for  the documentary. I recorded almost 15 clips of him speaking the same lines in different ways/accents and finally I found the perfect voiceover for the advert.
After recording the ad in voice memo in iPhone. I later edited it in final cut pro. The background music used in the text is‘eye of tiger’. Its the same background score I used for the picture montage in documentary.
The reason for using the same narrator and background music was to keep the audience hooked so that when the see the documentary they instantly realise apart from the title that it is the same documentary which they listened the advert of on the radio.
The next day I went to school and made my media teacher listen to it. He instantly  liked it but he told me that few changes in the ad will make it look more professional. So he made me add two or three people interviews in it . I added them and then again made him listen to it.  He said it was very well made.

Research - Examples for the narration.

Posted by Sabaina and Aiman

This was the combined research that Sabaina and I carried out to find examples for the narration of our documentary. We extracted the main points from different magazines and compiled them in one document. The narration has not been written yet but you will be listening to some of these examples in our documentary. The word document has been converted into JPEG format.

Ancillary tasks - Channel for the premiere of our documentary.

Posted by: Aiman and Sabaina

Our documentary will be aired on Aag Channel. Aag has been in the market since years now. With it's wide operations and efficiency in driving the auidiance towards it, it managed to create a large fan following at the initial stage of the setup. Aag is one of the most renowned tv channels of Pakistan. This channel is famous for its various programs that are dedicated to a number of media texts. Aag channel solely aims at the youth of Pakistan; as stated in its tag line i.e. Nawjawano ka channel (a channel for the youth), which directly captures the attention of the target market more effectively. Aag channel has been in the market for quite a while. Being a subsidiary of one of the most well-known production house of Pakistan, which is GEO TV, it was not much difficult for this channel to widen its fan following with the help of the label of GEO TV attached to it.

Ancillary tasks - Newspapers for the publication of our advert.

Posted by: Aiman and Sabaina

We have chosen the newspaper agencies that will be publishing the advert of our documentary. These two newspaper agencies hold position of being some of the most renowned agencies of Pakistan.

Dawn Newspaper

DAWN NEWS:

Dawn is Pakistan’s oldest and most widely read English-language newspaper. One of the country’s two largest English-language dailies, it is the flagship of the Dawn Group of Newspapers, published by Pakistan Herald Publications. It is known to have a weekday circulation of 138000. Dawn holds a number of offices in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad as well as a number of representatives abroad.

Dawn publishes a number of variants in newspapers. We will be putting our adverts in the Dawn Sunday Newspaper in particular. Reason being that, the Sunday edition consists of many sections that are aimed at a number of segments in the market due to which it manages to attract masses towards it. The advertisement will be printed in the Dawn Images section that is solely aimed at the youth and adults who are interested in the showbiz area. It consists of sections on the latest trends in fashion, technologies etc., the upcoming films and short films and much more. This section covers articles based on the media to some extent and it has a large fan following. So, due to these reasons we have picked Dawn Sunday Newspaper to be the median of our advertisement.

Ancillary task - Inspirations for the newspaper advert.

In accordance to the title of our documentary i.e. INDOORS ALTER OUTDOORS, we tried to incorporate the elements situated in both the scenarios we have portrayed in the documentary. The following pictures have acted as an inspiration for both of us in determine the right look for the newspaper advert, as these are purely based on physical as well as indoor activities. We have taken some components from each of these pictures, which will be witnessed in our final advert, later.

Ancillary task - Ideas for the radio advert.

posted by: Aiman and sabaina

As we have gone through the codes, conventions and research of our radio advert, its time that we write the script of our radio advert. We have a lot of options for it. We can either straight away ask the narrator to narrate the topic to the listeners, but this form would have been too dull and mundane or even give the impression of us imposing the idea on the listeners which is not what we are aiming for.

We could give general information regarding the main elements of the topic and then give an introduction of the topic itself.

So, after a lot of discussion we finally agreed upon one advert. We decided to start the advert with a question or two, this would create curiosity among the audience and they could actually relate the questions to themselves. Those questions will be linked to the topic of ours. Then, the narrator will introduce the title of our documentary, compelling the advance to watch the documentary in order to find the answers to the questions raised earlier. We will make sure that the narrator adds a natural and enthusiastic feel to the narration so that the audience feels the same way after listening to advert.

Ancillary Tasks - Ideas for the Newspaper advert (Changes)

Posted by: Sabaina and Aiman

There have been a change in plans in regard to our newspaper advert. Earlier, we decided on an idea which consisted of a picture of a kid who would be segregated from the middle with the help of a think line. One half of the picture will be having a cricket bat or tennis racket i.e. anything related to an outdoor activity. In the other half the kid will be holding some console in his hand. This was to incorporate the major elements of our documentary i.e. indoors alter outdoors. With this picture we managed to capture both the aspects. However, we released that this idea has been used by many other film posters due to which it is very common.  Example the poster below of the movie 'Ice princess'
220px-Ice_Princess

We did not want to make something that would give an impression that we copied an exact same idea from another media text. So, we started to think of another one. We came up with three main ideas which we decided to make:

1) To draw a cartoon picture of a cricket bat and a remote control of a console. In this we planned to show a race between in these. The bat and the remote were to be drawn in a way that the viewer had the impression that they both were running towards something. Then, we thought of drawing a kid sitting in front of the bat and the remote control, looking at them two. The idea was to show that the indoor and outdoor activities were having a race of reaching towards the kid first. It connoted the competition between these two activities these days.
2) The second idea we had was to draw two IPhone, from front and black both, the front was supposed to have a sketched picture of Dawood from the documentary in the screen of the IPhone and the back would have had the logo of our documentary i.e. Indoor Alter Outdoors, which has been posted earlier in our blog. This defined the transformation of children from outdoor to indoor activities with the help of the picture of an IPhone on the poster.
3) The last idea was to take a picture from the documentary and sketch it from top to bottom on Photoshop. The picture had to select in a way that had some prop in reference to the documentary that could have explained the idea well. After the sketching the logo and the dates were to written in reference to the codes and conventions of the documentary. The idea was simple yet very effective in conveying the message as it was to be extracted from the documentary itself.

After a long discussion, we decided to go with the third idea. This is because the idea was very much in reference to the documentary and we did not want to take the newspaper advert over the top. The newspaper adverts are supposed to be comprehensive and created with brevity and we believed that this idea would be the most suitable from all the other as they all had a risk of giving a very artificial look to the audience.

Ancillary task - Ideas for the newspaper advert.

The first idea we came up with had a cartoon picture which showed the two aspects of the topic. One the left side we showed a playground with swings, see-saws, badminton rackets laying idle on the ground with cricket bats. In that, we drew only one kid in the picture. In contrast, there was picture having a sofa on which we drew a lot of kids holding consoles, Wii, PSP etc. sitting in front of a television. Now, the main idea lies in the number of kids we showed in the two pictures. By putting only child in the play and a lot of kids in the living room, we wanted to give an idea of how a lot of children have been attracted so much by the technology these days that many are not interested in going outside in parks etc. Whereas, only one kid in the Park connotes how the number of children visiting parks have decreased and the reason for this change was displayed simultaneously in other picture. However, this idea was not appreciated by our media studies teacher as according to him we were imposing our idea on the audience, whereas, an advert must have a neutral message to give to the consumers. We certainly are not aiming at a conclusion in our documentary and so this idea was discarded.

Here is a picture of a VERY rough sketch that I made of the first idea for the advert.

However, after a lot of discussion with our media studies teacher, we finalized another idea which not only adapted a neutral approach but also managed to define the basis of our documentary more accurately. Now, we are going to create an advert of one kid who will be segregated by a thin line from the middle. One side will be dedicated to the outdoor activities, showing bat or maybe a tennis racket in his hand, whereas, the other half will connote the indoor activities by showing a console in his hand. This advert will aid in creating curiosity aiming the audience to find which side has have a more impact on the youth. The conclusion will be left upon the audience to make after watching the documentary.

Ancillary tasks - What makes an Ad attractive for the consumers?

Posted by Aiman and Sabaina:

We did a lot of research before making our radio and newspaper Adverts. We kept in mind the codes and conventions of advertisements.

While we were doing the research for our adverts we realized to use the audience theory so that's easy for us to target our audience. One of the audience theory we applied for our radio ad was the hypodermic syringe theory. It will directly inject the message to our viewers. This theory basically is a one directional communication process where the audience wont question the producer.

For our newspaper advert we applied the The uses and gratification model theory/opposite of effects theory. As newspaper ad is accessible for everyone so while making the ad for it we kept in mind this theory, that audience is active. It uses texts for its own pleasure and the power lies within the audience and not the producers. The audience has to decided. We are just giving them information.

To make an ad attractive for the viewers its important to be innovative so that the audience does not switch to another radio station when the ad comes. As a radio advert is not visual so colours and other visual aspects cannot be used to attract the audience. The main strong aspects of this kind of medium is the person who is narrating the ad, the idea and the background music.

Ancillary task - Codes and conventions of a newspaper advert.

There are several codes and conventions that are taken into account while constructing a newspaper advert. After research on these credentials, I came across a lot of different pointers which confused me a bit. However, the mutual ones I found helped in forming a clearer picture of the proper ways of making and advert; the conditions are as follows:

  • There is always a main image which portrays the entire idea of the media text. This image is mostly simple in nature as to clearly send out the topic on which the product is based on.
  • There is a logo. Logos are normally placed at the bottom right of the advert.
  • The channel logo is incorporated on the advert as well on which the media text is supposed to be aired; augmented with the website and the time of air mentioned at the bottom left of the advert.
  • The text is written with brevity, considering that the newspaper adverts are small in size. So, in order to prevent both the image and the text from jumbling with each other, the written part is normally kept very short.
  • There is a slogan. A slogan must not be confused with the logo of the final product. Slogans are solely based on defining the meaning of the product in a more woolly and informal way, as to make the advert catchier.
  • The color combinations used in the advert are interlinked with the story background of the product in order to make it relatable and cohesive.
  • In some adverts, the mise-en-scene could also be displayed to give reference to the media text aimed upon.

The two pictures below are newspaper adverts of two different films, taken from the internet and labelled accordingly by us.

Ancillary tasks - An introduction

Finally, the time as arrived when we must get on with the construction of the two ancillary tasks that are inter-linked with our final product (documentary), which will mark the ending point the overall construction of the A2 coursework.

We have decided on making a Radio Advert and a Newspaper advert. There are several reasons behind this choice of ours. Firstly, radio adverts will be something new for us try. Keeping in consideration that we have never worked on anything relating this particular medium of advertising it will be something new us to learn ad a bit challenging which will help make this project more interesting for us. Radio Ad would be a different approach as well. The double fold spread option that we had if combined with the newspaper advert would have had the risk making both the ancillary tasks monotonous. A radio advert is also more notable than that of a double fold spread or a newspaper. By putting in a catchy background music with an energetic and lively narration would definitely manage to capture a large audience. Furthermore, the newspaper advertisement could bring us the advantage of capturing masses. Considering that newspapers are sold to a large population whereas, a magazine is only limited to the narrow audience targeted, this medium of advertising would be an effective way of driving a large number of consumers towards our media text.

Ancillary Task- Work division

For the convenience of us both and for the saving of time, Sabaina and I decided to do I will the research, brainstorming on ideas, inspirations and scripts etc. everything together but we distributed the editing part between ourselves so that we the ancillary tasks get completed without taking too much time and hassle. So, it has been decided that Sabaina will be editing the radio advert and I will be editing the newspaper advert of our documentary.
