Audience's theories

Any media text has to go through 3 different levels:

Producer - Text - Audience

There are a number of theories which further define the connection between these three terms:

HYPERDERMIC THEORY:
In this particular theory the media directly injects the message to the audience. The audience is weak and vulnerable.
Over the years, a lot of researches have taken birth in regard to the behavior and preferences of audiences of different media texts. The media products are made for the audience to see and so a lot of emphasis and importance is given to the target audience before creating a product.
Passive i.e. there is no interaction with the media texts in consideration. All the people hold the same view about a particular media text. They accept what is provided to them and embrace it without any questions. There is only one way communication, which is from the producer's side in terms of the product it produces and the audience does not disagree with the message provided to them.

The roots of this theory lies in the study that questioned the impact media would have on the people, such as, the most vulnerable ones. It reflected the effects media would have on the ideas that people share about the media and audience as a whole, the middle class and the fear of masses i.e. the working class and the way it will hit the status quo already developed in a society.

However, over the years, the new developments found a number of problems with this theory. Many theorists suggest that as this theory has been developed a long time ago, it has become out of date and does not accurately fits to the changed preferences and thinking of people with time. So, the active audience, new theories were invented to explain the way they consume and comprehend different media texts. These theories suggest that it is unclear that people act in ways they watch in media text, such as, people who are violent are not because they watched it on a media text and acted accordingly. And it is clear that not every person who watches a media text is influenced by it. Therefore, a new theory was created called, ‘THE USES AND GRATFICATION THEORY’.

USES AND GRATIFICATION THEORY:
This theory has been created in opposition to the Hypodermic theory. In this theory the audience is active and it uses the media texts for the purpose of enjoyment and pleasure rather being used by it. They have the freedom of using, playing and rejecting the products sent by different producers. The audience uses it as means of diversion, escapism from their daily affairs, for information in reference to different topics, pleasure, for learning and emotional satisfaction etc. Furthermore, this theory suggests that the consumption could actually turn out to be helpful rather than causing dilemmas, e.g. the violent images could in different textc could prevent people from doing the same thing in real life and also act out their inner stress by its consumption.

ENCODING-DECODING MODEL: This theories refers to the active audience which is produced by Stuart Hall, who examines the link between the media texts and the audience.
The term encoding defines the process with which a producer constructs his media text and send it to the audience. Whereas, the decoding is the next stage to encoding in which the process with which the audiences reads and perceives these media texts.
According to Stuart Hall, all the media texts are interpreted by different people in different ways. They do not share perceptions in a uniform method rather they perceive things differently from each other. This is because people belonging from different cultures, races, countries and communities will differ thinking wise.

THE CULTRUAL EFFECT MODEL:
This concept puts emphasis on the diversity in the way people identify and interpret different media texts due to the varying background and cultures etc., they share.

THE RECEPTION THEORY: This theory puts in consideration the way people interpret different media texts instead of the media texts themselves, i.e. every person has the ability to interpret a particular text differently from others and create various meanings out of it. This theory explains that a producer encodes a media text with a particular concept or message that it tries to deliver to the audience. After the text is received to the audience, it either understands the true meaning on which it is based on or does not understand it or rejects it. Hall wrapped these differences in opinions in three terms:

  • The preferred reading: This is where the audience understand the message the producer tries to convey to the audience and agree with it.
  • The negotiated reading: In this the audience accepts and rejects the texts put in consideration the views they previously had.
  • The oppositional theory: In this the media text is rejected by the audience even when the meaning is recognized.

Audience

Posted by : Aiman and Sabaina

During the research of our documentary, our media studies teacher laid a lot of stress upon the importance of our target audience. This is because our documentary is being made for the audience to consume and interpret. It is very important to understand what is the driving factor of people towards our media text, and to know what our audience would want to see in our product we have run through questionnaires and interviews so that we could mold the final product in accordance to the demand of the people we are targeting. We understand how much importance the audience have due to which I have written the following information regarding audience that I came across during my media studies theory classes, and now I understand why we have been told to lay stress upon and keep in consideration the people we targeting at during the creation of our product.

What is an audience?

Before going on with the relative importance and ideologies revolving around the different groups of audiences around the world, we should first understand what an audience is. Audience is that that segment of people in particular for whom a media text is produced and to whom it is targeted at by the producer so that they consume it and interpret it in ways they like.

Why are audiences' important?
There are a number of reasons why audiances' are one of the main concerns of many producers during the creation of different media texts. Reason such as:
  • If there are not people to see a particular media text then what is the point of making it?
  • Through audiences we can establish the size of people that appreciated and liked a particular media text and determine whether it was a success in delivering its ideology to the people who watched it or not?
  • The consumption of the media text by the people will be the income for the producer. No producer would want to make something that no person will be interested in watching as no consumption would mean no rewards in return for the hard work and money put within the creation of that particular media text.
  • The advertisers play an imperative role in the creation of media texts. Most of the media related products are a result of the heavy investments made by the advertisers in order to achieve their own goals of interacting with people. These advertisers would want to know that if they are getting in return the value for their money invested, i.e. to discover among which segment of people has the advertisement become popular and the effectiveness of the advertisement (how people relate to it) by determining how many people has it attracted towards it. These advertising companies have segmented audiences in terms of social and economic values:
  • Survivors: Those people who want security and like routine
  • Social Climbers: Those who have a liking for the status symbols and materialism
  • Care Givers: Those are interested in caring and sharing.
  • Explorers: Those who believe in personal growth and the effectiveness of their actions towards influencing social change.

What role does media texts perform for the audience?
  • ·         It gives identity to the individuals.
  • ·         It gives a sense of purpose, creates aims and provides aspiration.
  • ·         It gives guidelines on how to fulfill these aims.
  • ·         It is a source of escapism for people. People get an alternative if they failed and to release their inner frustrations by relating to the ideologies of different media texts.

Documentaries de-construction-1

Before starting on making our own documentary doing this particular assignment is crucial. Deconstruction of any documentary helps discover even the minor details of it. Knowing this information would aid us during the construction of our project as observing the tiny bits and pieces cluster and make up the whole thing.

BIOGRAPHY ON ALFRED HITCHCOCK:

Duration: 43 minutes 05 seconds
Anchor: Paul Merton
Official Channel: BBC

The first documentary I have observed is a biography on a renowned personality, Alfred Hitchcock. This biography takes us through the life of Alfred Hitchcock, his experiences, his birth, his education and of coarse his success over the years. This documentary has been delivered to the it's target audience such as Alfred Hitchcock's fans, fans of old films, adults etc, via internet and television (BBC).

This particular clip is a blend of docu-soap and biography documentary. Reason being that the biography is part of a program which describes the history of celebrities in every episode, i.e. the program has several episodes. Other than that , the biography is participatory as an anchor participates in it himself who guides the viewers through out the entire clip and narratives Hitchcock's as a story being told to the viewers; this not only effectively gives the message to the audience but also makes it more interesting as the body language of the person narrating makes the viewers feel like he is directly speaking to them.

The codes and conventions are similar to those of a classic documentary. There is narration, an anchor who leads the story, interviews, mid close up shots on the interviewees, establishing shot of the birth place of the Hitchcock etc. These conventions are similar to those that will be witnessed in our documentary as ours is also based on classic documentary.

The location of the documentary is the Hitchcock birth place. This not only helps define his biography more effectively but also gives a feeling of practically experiencing his life. An example could be taken of the clips taken at the institution Hitchcock studied in when he was young. The anchor goes through the stories of Hitchcock on the places where those stories actually took place. Other then that, the clips from his famous movies are showcased in the entire documentary as to show his work and success that he gained from it. Instead of re-doing his entire life again, it is shown in the form of clips taken from his films which I believe better define the person Hitchcock was.

The soundtrack used in the background is quite strong. Similar to those heard in Hitchcock's films. This particular selection of music makes further covers the elements related to Hitchcock in depth.

What caught my attention the most were the camera angles and the lights of the biography. Although  the camera angles used are mostly the ones we see in all the biographies, e.g. the mid shots of the interviewee and the wide shots of the birth place of Hitchcock which establishes the scene etc. but what distinguished it from others were the dramatic shots of the university and the camera closing up on the face of the anchor while he narrates the story of Hitchcock in order to create more impact. Furthermore, the lights displayed during the interviews are dim lights with a strong key light which creates a very dramatic atmosphere. Hitchcock being a director himself, this biography has been produced in a way that the purpose behind is implemented, the strong drama, the serious mood etc. seen in Hitchcock's films are captured in this documentary.

Nature I am:

Duration: 10 minutes
Documentary taken from: www.vimeo.com

This documentary takes the viewers through nature.

This is a simple documentary. It has no interviews or anchors etc. It purely observational where different angles of the natural world are captured.

The cinematography plays a significant role in this documentary. It begins with an establishing shot of the mountains. The camera revolves around vista shots and close up shots of the entire area as a whole and the objects that lay within in particular.

The music of the video is soft, covering sounds of the movements of the objects and creatures that dwell in the wild.

Documentaries de-construction-3

HEARTBEAT OF THE PEOPLE:

Duration: 5 minutes 32 seconds
Documentary taken from: www.vimeo.com

The documentary is based on capturing the emotions and unity of people while carrying out the 'Occupy Wall Street' movement. It covers the various aspects of this particular movement, showing the different people and their activities during it.

The genre of the documentary is classic. The sub genre is observational as the director of the documentary has filmed people while carrying the strike, their opinions and emotions who made the strike possible. It takes the viewers through the inside view of the movement where they get to witness public standing strenuous for the cause.

The recce of the documentary is the same place where this particular movement took place. The location does not change throughout the entire clip.

When it comes to camera angles the documentary starts with a long shot highlighting a man standing with a sign stating his opinion on it. This documentary starts with a fast forward effect covering the people crossing by him. This shot was the establishing shot which stated the concept of the documentary to some extent and gave a wider view of the milieu of the location. The camera makes its way in between the huge gathering and takes candid shots, in particular, medium shots and mid long shots, with the help of special effect such as fade in,  of people, the objects they had in their hand describing what they felt and different wordings that were related to the situation. Moreover, the lights in this documentary are not professionally set, the documentary is shot outside due to which the help of natural light was used.

The music through out of video did not change. Throughout, the music had been soft in nature suiting to the cause people had gathered for

HIGH ON ECSTASY:

Duration: 59 minutes 2 seconds
Official Channel: National Geographic Channel

The other documentary is a classical one. This documentary covers the goes in depth of the lives of those people who consume drugs and the likely effects caused by this particular act. The documentary revolves around two students who are involved in this activity. These two persons observed closely, capturing their attitudes, their moods and their behaviors after using drugs in order to best describe the exact same after effects of millions of people going through the same things by focusing of two just people. This particular observational technique became the main point of our analyzing this documentary as we will also be taking the help of two kids to define the same physiological preferences of millions of children around the world.

The genre of this documentary is classical with that of observational. The story is based on capturing the activities of the people who use drugs with the help of two people to illustrate the overall phenomena. There is narration, interviews, clips from a disco which shows the activities of students after they are on drugs, the location etc.

The location of the documentary is not fixed. It changes with the story. The camera follows the students on the places they visit. Other then that, a disco has been filmed in order to show the likely effect of drugs which causes them to go out of control not knowing what they are doing.

The camera angles are similar to those of the codes and conventions of a classical documentary. The camera focuses on the imperative objects of the documentary especially drugs, the long shots (candid shots) of the student taking drugs in order to effectively film his/her while taking drugs, the camera is hand held at some places in order to give a lively effect to the scenes while following the students etc. The lights that are used normal lights of any room, however, in the opening sequence the key light is focused on different drugs as to give an idea to the viewers about the story if the entire documentary and also the flashing disco lights are captured while taking a wide shot of the disco places to give the viewers a feel of the actual place.

The music changes on different situations. Fast music is played on clips of disco to complement the feel of the entire place, some fast music is played at places where the students go out on streets being high on drugs etc.    The music slows down at places of narration so that the narrator is clearly understood by the audience.

Continuity Editing

Establishing shot:
This shot informs the viewers about the location where the corresponding scenes will take place.

180 Degree rule:
This shot is taken on the basis of an imaginary line which a camera can not pass through. This shot is usually taken at times of a conversation between two people.

Shot Reverse shot:
This shot mostly taken during conversations between two people. The camera is normally placed over the shoulders of the people talking to each other.

Fast editing:
This consists of a number a shots  which are covered in a short duration, very fastly, which connotes something happening quickly. I took these pictures from the opening sequence of the movie DARK SKIES.

Point of view:
This shot shows the point of view of a person, e.g. something he/she is looking at.

Dissolve:

Slow Editing: The shots are used for comparatively long duration of time than the shots of fast editing. The concept is the same; it is the duration of scenes that vary.

Match Cut: This technique matches an object in the first shot to an object in the second shot to bridge a gap between them.

Jump Cut: The shots of an object are captured in a sequence however the camera positions are not fixed. They vary in movement.

Eye-line match: This shows a person in one angle and the other person standing near him/her to show what the first person is looking.
