Ancillary task - The making of our radio advert

I am going to take the post from Sabaina's blog that will consist of the editing post of our Radio advert. Considering that other than all the research, ideas and script, Sabaina alone did the editing as we distributed the responsibility of editing of the two ancillary tasks between each other. Here is what Sabaina has to say about the editing of our Radio Advert:

Posted by Sabaina:
To make the radio advert I first had to record the script of it on recorder. I made my friend  do the voice over . He is the same person who did the voiceover for  the documentary. I recorded almost 15 clips of him speaking the same lines in different ways/accents and finally I found the perfect voiceover for the advert.
After recording the ad in voice memo in iPhone. I later edited it in final cut pro. The background music used in the text is‘eye of tiger’. Its the same background score I used for the picture montage in documentary.
The reason for using the same narrator and background music was to keep the audience hooked so that when the see the documentary they instantly realise apart from the title that it is the same documentary which they listened the advert of on the radio.
The next day I went to school and made my media teacher listen to it. He instantly  liked it but he told me that few changes in the ad will make it look more professional. So he made me add two or three people interviews in it . I added them and then again made him listen to it.  He said it was very well made.

Audience's theories

Any media text has to go through 3 different levels:

Producer - Text - Audience

There are a number of theories which further define the connection between these three terms:

HYPERDERMIC THEORY:
In this particular theory the media directly injects the message to the audience. The audience is weak and vulnerable.
Over the years, a lot of researches have taken birth in regard to the behavior and preferences of audiences of different media texts. The media products are made for the audience to see and so a lot of emphasis and importance is given to the target audience before creating a product.
Passive i.e. there is no interaction with the media texts in consideration. All the people hold the same view about a particular media text. They accept what is provided to them and embrace it without any questions. There is only one way communication, which is from the producer's side in terms of the product it produces and the audience does not disagree with the message provided to them.

The roots of this theory lies in the study that questioned the impact media would have on the people, such as, the most vulnerable ones. It reflected the effects media would have on the ideas that people share about the media and audience as a whole, the middle class and the fear of masses i.e. the working class and the way it will hit the status quo already developed in a society.

However, over the years, the new developments found a number of problems with this theory. Many theorists suggest that as this theory has been developed a long time ago, it has become out of date and does not accurately fits to the changed preferences and thinking of people with time. So, the active audience, new theories were invented to explain the way they consume and comprehend different media texts. These theories suggest that it is unclear that people act in ways they watch in media text, such as, people who are violent are not because they watched it on a media text and acted accordingly. And it is clear that not every person who watches a media text is influenced by it. Therefore, a new theory was created called, ‘THE USES AND GRATFICATION THEORY’.

USES AND GRATIFICATION THEORY:
This theory has been created in opposition to the Hypodermic theory. In this theory the audience is active and it uses the media texts for the purpose of enjoyment and pleasure rather being used by it. They have the freedom of using, playing and rejecting the products sent by different producers. The audience uses it as means of diversion, escapism from their daily affairs, for information in reference to different topics, pleasure, for learning and emotional satisfaction etc. Furthermore, this theory suggests that the consumption could actually turn out to be helpful rather than causing dilemmas, e.g. the violent images could in different textc could prevent people from doing the same thing in real life and also act out their inner stress by its consumption.

ENCODING-DECODING MODEL: This theories refers to the active audience which is produced by Stuart Hall, who examines the link between the media texts and the audience.
The term encoding defines the process with which a producer constructs his media text and send it to the audience. Whereas, the decoding is the next stage to encoding in which the process with which the audiences reads and perceives these media texts.
According to Stuart Hall, all the media texts are interpreted by different people in different ways. They do not share perceptions in a uniform method rather they perceive things differently from each other. This is because people belonging from different cultures, races, countries and communities will differ thinking wise.

THE CULTRUAL EFFECT MODEL:
This concept puts emphasis on the diversity in the way people identify and interpret different media texts due to the varying background and cultures etc., they share.

THE RECEPTION THEORY: This theory puts in consideration the way people interpret different media texts instead of the media texts themselves, i.e. every person has the ability to interpret a particular text differently from others and create various meanings out of it. This theory explains that a producer encodes a media text with a particular concept or message that it tries to deliver to the audience. After the text is received to the audience, it either understands the true meaning on which it is based on or does not understand it or rejects it. Hall wrapped these differences in opinions in three terms:

  • The preferred reading: This is where the audience understand the message the producer tries to convey to the audience and agree with it.
  • The negotiated reading: In this the audience accepts and rejects the texts put in consideration the views they previously had.
  • The oppositional theory: In this the media text is rejected by the audience even when the meaning is recognized.

Audience

Posted by : Aiman and Sabaina

During the research of our documentary, our media studies teacher laid a lot of stress upon the importance of our target audience. This is because our documentary is being made for the audience to consume and interpret. It is very important to understand what is the driving factor of people towards our media text, and to know what our audience would want to see in our product we have run through questionnaires and interviews so that we could mold the final product in accordance to the demand of the people we are targeting. We understand how much importance the audience have due to which I have written the following information regarding audience that I came across during my media studies theory classes, and now I understand why we have been told to lay stress upon and keep in consideration the people we targeting at during the creation of our product.

What is an audience?

Before going on with the relative importance and ideologies revolving around the different groups of audiences around the world, we should first understand what an audience is. Audience is that that segment of people in particular for whom a media text is produced and to whom it is targeted at by the producer so that they consume it and interpret it in ways they like.

Why are audiences' important?
There are a number of reasons why audiances' are one of the main concerns of many producers during the creation of different media texts. Reason such as:
  • If there are not people to see a particular media text then what is the point of making it?
  • Through audiences we can establish the size of people that appreciated and liked a particular media text and determine whether it was a success in delivering its ideology to the people who watched it or not?
  • The consumption of the media text by the people will be the income for the producer. No producer would want to make something that no person will be interested in watching as no consumption would mean no rewards in return for the hard work and money put within the creation of that particular media text.
  • The advertisers play an imperative role in the creation of media texts. Most of the media related products are a result of the heavy investments made by the advertisers in order to achieve their own goals of interacting with people. These advertisers would want to know that if they are getting in return the value for their money invested, i.e. to discover among which segment of people has the advertisement become popular and the effectiveness of the advertisement (how people relate to it) by determining how many people has it attracted towards it. These advertising companies have segmented audiences in terms of social and economic values:
  • Survivors: Those people who want security and like routine
  • Social Climbers: Those who have a liking for the status symbols and materialism
  • Care Givers: Those are interested in caring and sharing.
  • Explorers: Those who believe in personal growth and the effectiveness of their actions towards influencing social change.

What role does media texts perform for the audience?
  • ·         It gives identity to the individuals.
  • ·         It gives a sense of purpose, creates aims and provides aspiration.
  • ·         It gives guidelines on how to fulfill these aims.
  • ·         It is a source of escapism for people. People get an alternative if they failed and to release their inner frustrations by relating to the ideologies of different media texts.

Posted by: Aiman and Sabaina

Our documentary will be aired on Aag Channel. Aag has been in the market since years now. With it's wide operations and efficiency in driving the auidiance towards it, it managed to create a large fan following at the initial stage of the setup. Aag is one of the most renowned tv channels of Pakistan. This channel is famous for its various programs that are dedicated to a number of media texts. Aag channel solely aims at the youth of Pakistan; as stated in its tag line i.e. Nawjawano ka channel (a channel for the youth), which directly captures the attention of the target market more effectively. Aag channel has been in the market for quite a while. Being a subsidiary of one of the most well-known production house of Pakistan, which is GEO TV, it was not much difficult for this channel to widen its fan following with the help of the label of GEO TV attached to it.

Ancillary tasks - Newspapers for the publication of our advert.

Posted by: Aiman and Sabaina

We have chosen the newspaper agencies that will be publishing the advert of our documentary. These two newspaper agencies hold position of being some of the most renowned agencies of Pakistan.

Dawn Newspaper

DAWN NEWS:

Dawn is Pakistan’s oldest and most widely read English-language newspaper. One of the country’s two largest English-language dailies, it is the flagship of the Dawn Group of Newspapers, published by Pakistan Herald Publications. It is known to have a weekday circulation of 138000. Dawn holds a number of offices in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad as well as a number of representatives abroad.

Dawn publishes a number of variants in newspapers. We will be putting our adverts in the Dawn Sunday Newspaper in particular. Reason being that, the Sunday edition consists of many sections that are aimed at a number of segments in the market due to which it manages to attract masses towards it. The advertisement will be printed in the Dawn Images section that is solely aimed at the youth and adults who are interested in the showbiz area. It consists of sections on the latest trends in fashion, technologies etc., the upcoming films and short films and much more. This section covers articles based on the media to some extent and it has a large fan following. So, due to these reasons we have picked Dawn Sunday Newspaper to be the median of our advertisement.

Ancillary task - Inspirations for the newspaper advert.

In accordance to the title of our documentary i.e. INDOORS ALTER OUTDOORS, we tried to incorporate the elements situated in both the scenarios we have portrayed in the documentary. The following pictures have acted as an inspiration for both of us in determine the right look for the newspaper advert, as these are purely based on physical as well as indoor activities. We have taken some components from each of these pictures, which will be witnessed in our final advert, later.
