Scene analysis

We were assigned to carry out an analysis based on cinematography of scenes taken from any film. After the detailed lecture and practical implementation of our knowledge (posted earlier on the blog) our teacher wanted to assess our understanding furthermore. This assignment was done individually; not in pairs. I analyzed a few scenes of the movie HUGO. My assignment is as follows:

Synopsis - Final

Posted by Aiman and Sabaina

SYNOPSIS:

Documentary: Indoors alter Outdoors

The idea is to shoot a documentary on how our generation has changed in terms of having more of indoors activities rather than those of outdoors. This mostly refers to children and young teenagers that have shifted to video games, mobile gaming applications, various social networking sites etc. from physical activities e.g. tennis, cricket, etc.

The genre of our documentary is cause and effect and the sub genre is docu-fiction.

This documentary targets children, teenagers and parents. As we are going to highlight one of the most common activities of children and teenagers these days we would be able to capture the attention of this segment. With that, as this documentary focuses on children which would help get parents attention also.

This documentary would be reached out to its consumers through television channels such as GEO TV, Aag, National Geographic Channel (Nat Geo Junior) etc. It would be aired at suitable timings that would help us deliver the final media product to our target audience e.g. it would be aired around 5 p.m. when children and teenagers are at their homes from school. Also, at prime time (8 p.m.) because at this time the whole family present at their home free from their busy routines. Posters will be placed in public places such as schools, restaurants, bookstores and DVD stores etc.

This documentary will also be posted on the official channel of YouTube. It will also be shared on official pages of National Geographic Channel, discovery channel and TLC on various socializing websites in order to attract the attention of masses.

The people we require to in the making of this documentary will be children (8-12), teenagers (13-16) and parents (in order to determine the problems that parents have with their children having just limited number activities). Not only will we showing their interviews; they will also be shot while carrying out this particular activity. We will be interviewing aged people as well in order to get to know about the activities in their times in order to make our documentary more informative.

Our research will be done through various primary as well as secondary medians,(mostly on primary as we think first hand information is more accurate and up to date) which includes interview questionnaire and blog research. With the help of documentaries being aired on Channels such as TLC, National Geographic channel and Discovery channel get to know discover what areas of this topic to cover and the suitable angles for every scene. We will be carrying out an exercise by taking interviews so that we could see which angle suites better which scene as this would be of immense help to us during the creation of our storyboard. The documentaries posted by other students of a level would aid us while coming up with ideas of different scenes and correct places for narratives.

We would use voice over/narrator for this documentary as without this convention we would not be able to flow from scene to scene.

Re-submission of synopsis-2

Short film 1:Discontented Life

This story starts from a man who was running towards his car holding a bag. He hurriedly sat in it and started to drive. While driving, expression of anger and frustration surrounded his face, he kept on checking his watch. While checking his watch the film starts to rewind and stops at the time after which the reasons behind his uncomforting began. (Flashback) Every morning he had to face the same routine i.e. a fight with his wife over small issues, then he used to go to work from 9 to 5 (which he found quite unproductive) and then used to come home where he had to face his father’s arguments and his wife’s disagreements over everything. (The scene from the current situation comes again) He stopped at a bus stop and paid for the ticket. He waited at the waiting area for the bus to departure. He received a call from his wife; while he looks at it the second flashback occurs. Earlier that day, during a fight with his wife, he gathers the courage to leave to some place where he could find peace despite having a family. He packed a bag and flooded away from the house ignoring everything. (Flashback ends) The announcement from the management of the stop occurred and he decided not to answer the call. He picked up his bag and went towards the bus. When he was about to be seated, his alarm clock went on having a description ‘pick Amna from school’. When he saw that he forgot about all the thoughts he had been having at that particular moment, his stress, his frustration, everything and ran towards his car to pick up his daughter. When he reached her school he waited anxiously to see the most important part of his life that he was about to leave before. While he saw his daughter running to him with a big smile on her face, that’s when he thought to himself that some things in life are worth too much to let go.

The movie genre for our short film is drama, as the topic we are dealing with is serious. The
sub-genre, which covers this short film, is melodrama. Melodramatic plots often deal with
"crises of human emotion, failed romance or friendship, strained familial situations, tragedy,
illness, neuroses, or emotional and physical hardship." This exactly goes with the topic we
are showing in our short film. Our main character has failed relationship with his father and
wife. It is said that if they are targeted to a male audience, then they are called "guy cry"
films. This short film is one of those.

This film targets mid-teenagers and adults of all ages. This is because at these ages people have developed the maturity to understand such situations in life. This age group would be able to understand the ideology behind our short film easily. Some might even relate the concept with their own lives, which would make it more interesting for them.

This short film will reached to its audience via television channels such as Geo TV, Aag, and local film channels of different cable connections (World call and Wateen) etc. With the help of launching theatrical trailers we would be able to capture masses. This will be placed during the beginning of famous film such as The Dark Knight Rises, Spider Man, and Madagascar etc. We will be posting teasers of the short film on YouTube and Facebook and on television between the commercial breaks of renowned programs, in order to create awareness among the target audience about the launch of this short film. Moreover, we will be placing poster in universities, restaurants, DVD stores and bookstores. The short film will first be released in cinemas, then on television (aired at prime time twice after two hours gap and on weekends at 6 p.m., 8p.m. and midnight as people are free from their busy routines) simultaneously it will be made available in DVD stores. After that the film will also be posted on YouTube. We will be creating website of this short film in order to get reviews of the target audience about it. We might even sponsor events that we believe would be visited by our target audience the most. For further promotion we will be placing our Ad for this short film on billboards at places where our target audience visit frequently. The Ads of the short film will also be published in magazines and entertainment sections of newspapers such as Sunday Times, The News etc.

The recce is available to us without any dilemmas. Other than the bus stop (which would be problem to shoot at) we have decided on the other locations (a house and office room) to construct our film at.

Our final two stories submitted for the approval from our teachers.

1) SYNOPSIS:

Documentary: Indoors alter Outdoors

The idea is to shoot a documentary on how our generation has changed in terms of having more of indoors activities rather than those of outdoors. This mostly refers to children and young teenagers that have shifted to video games, mobile gaming applications, various social networking sites etc. from physical activities e.g. tennis, cricket, etc.
There are several types of documentaries but two most common documentaries are classic and docu-soap. Classic documentary represents facts and evidence on a particular subject. Doc-soap focuses on several “characters “ or specific place.

Either we would be making classic documentary in which we would use various graphics or computer generated images to make our documentary more interesting to the viewers or we would be making docu-soap documentary. Docu-soap documentary does not have many conventions as it unfolds with the characters actions or with the situation. As time has changed so is they way of making the documentary now they are shown in a more dramatic way with suitable background music to make it more interesting for the viewers. We would be doing that too.

Things to do.

The schedule for the entire film making process has been made. In order to complete our products on time it's crucial for us to go according to that time table.

The first week was given to idea development of our media product. That is almost done. The ideas have been approved by one teacher and now we are waiting for the approval of the Head. Fingers crossed for that, hope she picks up the documentary!

As stated in the previous document, we came up with four ideas. 1 for a documentary, 2 for short film and 1 for a music video. The idea of music video was not carried further as the copy rights of the song we selected are not available to us. So the rest of the three ideas were taken further for selection. Two out of three have been chosen by our Media teacher for  our media product; which consists of documentary and a short film. The second short film was rejected as it did not have that appeal to it. It was monotonous in a way that the entire story revolved around just two characters and the idea itself was not as interesting as that of other two ideas. The ending was a bit too 'filmy' as well. I'm happy with the fact that the two ideas on which my team mate and I worked the most have been appreciated by the teacher.

Yesterday's class went really well. I needed the appreciation considering I got a C on an assignment which really DE-motivated me.

With that, we were taught about some of the key comportment of media studies. The information we need to put in our blogs divided into four categories.

  • Research
  • Planning
  • Construction
  • Evaluation

All we need to do is to follow these points and make sure nothing gets overlooked. We have been provided with all the details and now, the next step is to combine all the suitable and relevant  information and put it under these headings.

Hoping for the best for future.

In order to shoot this video we would be using a HD camera to capture good resolution of the film and laptops in for editing. The video would be edited using the software’s Final cut Pro and Windows Live Movie Maker. We will be using Photoshop for producing the logo for our documentary.
PROS: Making a documentary would be easy as compared to other media products:
·         Our work with be based on results received from primary research. This ensures our information to be authentic in nature.
·         Making this documentary would be easy in a way that the people we require for the construction are available in our surroundings.
·         This topic is related to children and teenagers relating one of their most favorite topics that would help drive more audience for our media products.
·         Moreover, the people we require to carry out our research on are easily available.

CONS: There are a number of limitations in for this particular idea.
·         This topic attaches with it the responsibility of choosing the right people to interviews which would require more research.
·         We would have to go to different locations in order to gain information on a vast number in order to get accurate results.
·         We would have to capture scenes consisting people or nature to put them in it as seen in many documentaries.

Short film 1:This story starts from a man who was running towards his car holding a bag. He hurriedly sat in it and started to drive. The Ads of the short film will also be published in magazines and entertainment sections of newspapers such as Sunday Times, The News etc.
The characters we need for this short film are few. We will be needing a middle aged man and woman, an aged man to be the father and a girl. As the characters we require in this short film are less in number it will be convenient for us to handle the construction of the film efficiently. The recce is available to us without any dilemmas. Other than the bus stop (which would be problem to shoot at) we have decided on the other locations (a house and office room) to construct our film at.
For the research work we will using the help of internet to come across short films posted by the students before, as this would help us with our own project. We will be going through blogs in order to put in all the information we require for to post in our own blog and ensure we do not miss anything. These blogs will help us create a plan on all the things we require before making the short film. With the help of interviews and questionnaires we will be able to gather the views of our target audience about the genre and the concept of the short film so that we could make necessary changes to it. We will be carrying out interviews in order to experiment different angles for different scenes which would save time for us while constructing the story board.
With the help of a HD camera for the shooting of the short film we will be able to get good resolution of the video that will make it more appealing to the target audience. We will be using Final cut pro and Windows Live Movie Maker for the editing of our short film. Moreover, we will produce our logo for the short film on Photoshop.
PRO 'S
·         We really love the concept of this video and we really want to work on it. The effect involved e.g. flashbacks, are something we believe world make the video more interesting.
·         We just need few actors for this short film.
·         The beginning of the video would give a feel to the viewers that the man is running away from his life to follow his own dreams however, in our story the man doesn’t leave giving a twist in the story.

CONS:
·         The cast of the film is really difficult to decide. We need really talented actors to perform in this short film so that it turns out well.
·         To shoot this short film we need at least 4 different locations. Which is really difficult to find as in some on the locations we decided e.g. a bus stop. We are not allowed to shoot there.

Short Film 2:This story is about two girls, named Amna and Ayesha, who are taking media studies in a levels. In the advanced level they have been given choice of the media product that they can make as part of their A levels. In order to do that the class have been asked to make a team consisting of two persons in total. Being friends for a while now Amna and Ayesha decide to pair up with each other. The teacher warns them about not pairing up with friends as sometimes conflicts arise due to dis agreements. However, they are completely confident about their decision.
They get quite enthusiastic about this project. In class they start discussing ideas. The teacher likes some of the ideas they present which gives them more confidence. That same day they have been assigned with analysis on a blog. They discuss everything the same night. The other day, the teacher makes four groups and ask to put in the correct terms relating media product under correct headings. Being the first team they go up to the board Amna starts writing, being rushed by the teacher she starts to panic and doesn’t listen to Ayesha when she was correcting. After they are done most of terms written turn out to be incorrect. They get quite disappointed. The rest of the class gets an idea of the correct terms during the time when the teacher corrects them both with give others an edge. The teacher comes up to them and says ‘girls, open up your mind’ this leads to further disappointment and they both don’t talk to each other the entire class about it. The same day they start discussing ideas on their video ideas. Disagreements arise and they both decide to write their own paper and then select on the best one. The other day after the paper has been written by both they listen to both of theirs story but still they are stick to ones they wrote themselves. They have an argument and they both hang up without any ideas being decided.
The next day the Ayesha doesn’t come to school due to some reasons. Amna gives her story to the teacher without consultation. When Amna comes to know about it she gets offended, they have a fight and they both don’t talk to each other for days.
Having seen the disagreements, three of their close friends decide to come up with a plan in order to erase the conflict. They call them both at a location without being in each other’s knowledge. After they arrive, both are seated together face to face and are told to tell each other how they actually feel. They fight for a while but during their fight their friends show them the projects they have made earlier together and the level of passion they hold for media studies. They realize that conflicts won’t do them any good and decide to make up with eachother.
This short film also comes under drama genre. The sub-genre of this film would be melodrama. This short film will have more dramatic impact as it’s based on two female characters that are in a levels (high school). They are teenagers and teenagers tend to be more dramatic and we will show them like that. It will have a little bit of comedy. Some sarcastic sense of humor, which will make the movie more interesting.
This short film targets teenagers (both genders). We believe this would be attractive to those people the most who have been, are or will be taking Media studies as a subject in their A levels. This film would not only give them some information but also important tips before creating their own groups.
This video be aired on television channels such as Aag TV, Geo TV and local cable movie channels (World call and Wateen) etc. It will be around 6 p.m. and at prime time when teenagers are free from school hours. Posters will be placed at schools and universities as our main target audience are present there, restaurants where are our target audience visit the most (which will discovered through research), DVD stores and book stores. Moreover, we will be playing cinema trailers before airing of famous teenage film in cinemas.
For the research work we will using the help of internet to come across short films posted by the students before, as this would help us with our own project and also to gather information about the genre of our short film. We will be going through blogs in order to put in all the information we require for to post in our own blog. With the help of interviews and questionnaires we will be able to gather the views of our target audience about the genre and the concept of the short film. We will be carrying out interviews in order to experiment different angles for different scenes which would save time for us while constructing the story board.
For the making of this short film we will use a HD camera for quality resolution. The short film will be edited on Final cut Pro and Windows Live Movie Maker. With the help of Photoshop we will be designing our logo for the short film.
The people we require for this film are two teenage girls, a male mid aged teacher and a few students to create a classroom environment. The location we need for the short film is a house and school. These two locations are quite convenient for us to carry out our construction work at. We will be able to get students for the short film from school as well.
PROS:
·         This film could be made in our own school and our houses as the locations; it will convenient for us as well as the girls we require in the video.
·         The idea relating to what we are currently studying gives us an edge on the research work.
·         This idea is going straight which would make the editing a bit easy.

CONS:
·         The possible cons of this short film would be that we would have to put in a lot of scenes in order to make the reasons prominent for the conflicts.
·         This idea might seem to some people as to much ‘filmy’ that puts in the risk of the final project turning out to be artificial. This film would require a lot of props and accurate settings such as a proper class room, students would be required to make the class look realistic etc.
·         This idea limits the audience to just those people who are taking or have taken media studies.
